Reasons to do yoga | Why practice yoga everyday

There are thousands of different exercise options available today, but we all have so little time to do any let alone more than one.  From spinning and running to Pilates and kickboxing, the options are endless.  We can go to the gym and run on a treadmill, we can shoot basketball hoops in our driveway, or we can take a walk around the block.

Reasons to do yoga. Why practice yoga everyday

I believe in the importance of regular exercise. I also believe that yoga is not for everyone, and that’s okay. If yoga isn’t for you, I’d encourage you to try some other form of exercise that you enjoy- and to stick with it.

But if you are on the fence about dedicating time to a yoga practice, here are a few reasons why I think practicing yoga is one of the best things you can do for yourself.

1. Stretch, Strength and Cardio at the same time

Practicing yoga allows you to both strengthen and stretch your body at the same time. Many other exercise programs focus more on strength (weight lifting), cardio (running), or stretching only.  A solid yoga practice will combine all three for the best of all worlds.

2. Mind and Body

Yoga is not just about training the body, it is also about training the mind.  Holding a difficult pose while focusing on the breath and meditation takes extreme concentration.  In other exercise practices, you can easily allow your mind to wonder.  Not in yoga.  Part of the practice is the concentration itself.

3. Relaxation and Rejuvenation

Yoga teaches that relaxation is just as important as the exercises themselves.  Without relaxing between each pose and after your practice, you will not allow your body time to heal itself. Part of the reason we carry around extra weight is due to stress. A relaxing and rejuvenating yoga practice can help you lose weight not just because you are burning calories, but also because you are allowing your body to heal.
